Buffers as a series aims to explore the Green Line that divides Cyprus, it looks to expose the current tension of a divided State in a liminal realm. The photographs in this series were taken over a series of three trips to Cyprus in 2019 as a data gathering exercise for an architectural design studio Contested States and the Architecture of the In-Between. Over the course of these visits Cyprus as a case study became a case study of contradiction, difference, separation, and overwhelming division enforced by old ways of thinking. The Green Line is currently monitored by militaries on both the Northern and Southern forces however is monitored and maintained by the UN Peace Keeping forces which maintain the status-quo which creates a strange and often tense environment of existence as three institutions maintain diplomacy over one small island in the Mediterranean.
